Hagens Organic Butcher: Where Quality Meets Sustainability Dedicated to nourishing the body with quality product Hagens Organic Butcher knocks it out of the park. Offering incredible organic meat from local farms, that's both ethically raised and tastes amazing. What I love most about Hagens is their commitment to sustainability. They even have "Sustainable Sundays" where you bring your own container and save 10% on your purchase (up to $10)! It's a win-win -win - you, the conscious economy and the environment. Highly recommend a visit to their Prahran Market location (or any of their 5locations across Melbourne) for a truly delicious and ethical meat-buying experience!

I purchased ham and osso bucco last Thursday. The following day, Easter Friday, I went to cook the ossobucco and unfortunately it had a very strong putrid smell. Both my partner and I were unsettled by the offensive smell and chucked it out. I cook osso bucco frequently enough (as well as other boned meat) to know this was not safe to use. I immediately emailed the issue and to see how an exchange can be organised. I was told I needed to bring in photos and proof of purchase. Logically, I believe the time stamp of being within a day and proof of purchase is enough to prove I didn’t leave it sitting in my fridge for days and that a photo can’t show a foul smell. So I didn’t take a photo, how could this show the smell? Knowing this, that I had thrown it out, I was then told I need to bring it to prove the smell. Everything was closed on Friday. I can’t have putrid meat sit in my fridge for over 4 days, and then travel 45+ mins on public transport with it. This is quite unreasonable, especially given the Easter public holidays. I have been purchasing from you guys since 2017 (mostly south Melbourne and city location) and the only other time I’ve had an issue was an online order with a whole chicken, and i was offered a refund. I only asked for an exchange for this issue. Pretty disappointing experience- and also difficult to communicate and resolve as there is no direct phone number for the prahran location.

Bought a whole chicken from Hagen’s in Prahran Market yesterday and asked the butcher to split it up for me. This is what I got (see photos). Instead of breast, thighs, drumsticks etc (like how normal butchers do it), they carelessly chopped up a whole chicken into 16 little pieces with the carcass still attached. I couldn’t make heads or tails of what was what. You can tell from one of the photos that they actually gave me one and a half drumsticks - no idea where the rest of it went. After spending $37 dollars on a whole chicken I’m left without a single piece or cut that I can make out much less use. A massive thumbs down from me 👎👎👎

  • Didn't shop from here but will definitely go back for some stuff... Looks very, very good and there are some good choices. Prices are pretty good for what is on offer being organic.

Customer here for 10 yrs+. Shop staff have always been great and the meat is of decent quality. As of late 2024 though (now Feb '25), deliveries have been sporadic, meaning stock has been sparse. The shop often looks bare and we've had to use other butchers as a result. Posting this so the owners realise the depth of the problem, as despite my repeatedly mentioning this in person, nothing seems to be changing. Will amend this review if / when remedied.
