The reviews here don’t fully reflect how good this butcher is. It’s easily one of the best in Canberra, with an impressive range of beef, lamb, and pork cuts. They break down whole animals on site, which is increasingly rare and shows in the quality and variety available. The staff are knowledgeable and willing to prepare cuts exactly how you want them. If you value buying from a proper butcher, this place is well worth the trip.

I picked up a selection of sausages today from Market Meats. The sausage flavours are a great mix of inventive flavours, from butchers you can see care for their product. A bit on the pricier side but when you eat the meat you will see why, and it’s justified given the quality in my opinion. Service, hygiene, cleanliness all spot on. Thanks for the awesome snags.

I’m very disappointed with my experience at this butcher. I drove all the way from Gungahlin because I believe in supporting small local businesses rather than buying from big supermarkets like Coles. I purchased 500g of mince and some pork after seeing beautiful, fresh-looking mince in the display cabinet. However, when I got home, I discovered that the mince in my bag was completely different from what I had seen in the window. It was grey, looked old, and certainly did not appear fresh. No one mentioned this, and I was charged full price. As someone who goes out of my way to support local businesses, this was very disappointing. Customers trust local shops to provide honesty and quality. If the quality is poor and the product sold is not what is displayed, it makes it hard to justify travelling extra kilometres to support small businesses. Unfortunately, based on this experience, I won’t be returning. Hi Bede, Thank you for taking the time to explain your process. I do appreciate your detailed response. I am well aware of the effect oxygen has on untreated meat, and in fact, untreated meat is exactly what I want. I have a toddler, and I choose to feed her the highest-quality products possible. As I mentioned in my review, I am also happy to drive the extra kilometres and pay more to support local businesses rather than supermarkets. However, what I took home did not look like mince that had simply lost some surface colour due to oxidation. In my opinion, it looked, feels much older than that. What I found difficult to understand was how the bright red mince displayed in the window could become uniformly grey during the drive from Belconnen to Gungahlin. My concern is not about natural colour change—it’s about trust. If there is older mince that needs to be sold, I believe the honest approach is to explain it to the customer, perhaps offer it at a reduced price, or clearly identify it as such. What disappointed me was feeling that I was shown fresh mince in the display but given something different in the bag while paying full price. I understand that product losses are difficult for a small business, and I genuinely want local businesses to succeed. But trust is the reason many of us choose to shop locally. Once that trust is questioned, it’s very hard to rebuild. Thank you again for your explanation. I respect that you took the time to respond, but I also stand by my experience as a customer.

Initially, we believed our negative experiences were isolated incidents, perhaps due to the staff having an occasional difficult day. However, after reading numerous reviews detailing poor customer service and unprofessional conduct—which align closely with how we have been spoken to—it is clear that this is a systemic issue rather than an oversight on our part. Following our experience today, we have decided to take our business elsewhere. Moving forward, we will be supporting Tathra Free Range Butcher around the corner, where the staff consistently demonstrate excellent customer service and professionalism.

Sadly I had horrible and rude service today that left me leaving feeling quite upset. I bought lamb chops but was unsure of how many I would get for certain prices and instead of being understanding and helping I was practically laughed at and made feel like I was being a huge inconvenience. The young man who served me was incredibly condescending. I won’t be returning despite how good the meat is.
